Renting, like most things in life has it’s pros and cons. On one hand, as a renter you never have to worry about things like maintenance, while on the other hand you might end up spending more money every month when compared to buying. If you prefer the freedom to change your residents every year or two then renting may be the way to go. Home ownership can provide you with equity and return on investment over several years, which is a big factor for most. As well, with a home you are free to customize it to your liking and make it exactly the way you want.
In all reality, it’s tough to say if renting is better than buying because it all depends on your situation and what you’re looking for. However, if you are one of those looking to rent then here are a few of the things that I consider to be “must have’s” in any rental property.
- Washer and Dryer- Having personally spent over a year of my life living in apartments without washers and dryers I can attest to the importance of finding a rental that has them. There is nothing convenient about packing up dirty laundry and taking it to the laundromat. Plus with public laundromats you feel obligated to stay there and keep an eye on your clothes which can take up a lot of your free time. If you’ve ever gone without a washer or dryer in your living space then you know howv valuable they can be.
- Covered Parking- You’d be surprised how much you appreciate covered parking once you go without it. If you live in snow country then you know full well how much of a pain it is to spend 10-15 minutes every morning cleaning the mounds of snow and ice off your car. I’ve lived in the snow without covered parking and I dreaded uncovering my car every morning. Now that I’m here in Arizona I don’t worry about snow anymore but covered parking still weighs heavy on my must have list. With the extreme heat of Arizona summers every bit of shade counts. Finding an apartment with covered parking or even a garage can help you to keep your car cooler, protect your exterior paint, and maintain the interior, especially if you have leather seats.
- Cupboard Space- Making sure that you apartment has enough storage space is key to a good rental experience. Spend a few months in an apartment with boxes in your room because there isn’t enough cupboard space and you’ll never settle for less. Storage is like money, you’re never going to complain if you have too much.
- Dishwasher– Not only should you make sure your soon-to-be apartment has a dishwasher but see if it’s full-size or not. Some smaller apartments come with dishwashers that just quite aren’t up to par with larger units that you may be used to. Washing all your dishes by hand can be tedious and tiresome. Don’t spend your free time cleaning dishes when you can get a dishwasher to do the work for you.
